NOAA NWS/JSU
Diversity Partnership - A Year of Success and
Renewal of Funding

Initiating a New Partnership for the 21st Century: NOAA/NWS and JSU  Promoting Diversity in Atmospheric Science Through Research, Application, and in Partnership with the NWS (PDAS-RAP)

The NOAA NWS/JSU Diversity
Partnership commenced in January 2001 with several goals set forth.  Some of those goals included the development of operational forecasts and visualization products, operational research, and
severe storm verification. Other goals include  identification  of undergraduate  students to apply for  the Student Career
Experience Program (SCEP), local
community service and the capacity building for students program..  As part of the partnership, operational research projects have been conducted that will prove to be useful tools to scientists at the NWS JAN.

The JSU- MP takes pride in the          accomplishments that have been made during the first year of the partnership.  It is due to the success of the first years work that additional funding has been awarded for a second year.  All          previously stated goals mentioned above have been completed and/or in progress.  Several operational research projects have been  conducted.

The first years goal of promoting
diversity in Atmospheric Science was achieved, in part, by giving support to three undergraduate Meteorology majors (Rondah Smart, Kim Coleman and Ashton Robinson- Cook) and giving them an opportunity to gain first hand experience and knowledge of NWS methods and operations.  The students
began working afternoons at the NWS JAN this past summer and resumed their work during the fall semester.   Due to the knowledge gained at the NWS, the students were selected as overseers of a local metropolitan-area spotter network to be developed in the near future.  This has been a  wonderful opportunity to  enhance students professional and     academic development.  Students have assisted in severe storm research and
